ENGLISH LANGUAGE MILITARY TERMINOLOGY: TRANSLATION PROBLEMS

Abstract

The article deals with English-language military terminology from a translation perspective. The expansion of English language usage in the modern world dictates the necessity to study lexical and stylistic peculiarities and word-formation models of military terminology in English. Military terminology includes words and combinations of words that denote military concepts, scientific and technical terms used in connection with military conceptsMilitary materials differ from any other materials in the abundance of special military vocabulary, wide use of military and scientific-technical terminology, the presence of a certain number of variable-resistant and stable word combinations characteristic only for the military sphere of communication, the abundance of military nomenclature and special abbreviations and symbols used only in military materials, and in terms of syntax - a wide use of elliptical (especially in military documentation) and cliched constructions. Translation of military texts requires special accuracy, as the translated material can serve as a basis for making important decisions, conducting military operations, etc.
