Abstract

This article is devoted to the symbolic meanings contained in the halls of oriental martial arts (dojo) in the cultural space of Eurasia, Russia and Kazakhstan. Martial arts are not only sports, but also symbolic activities, which is reflected in the elements of decoration and arrangement of the hall.

The original meaning of the dojo, embedded in it by Japanese culture, undergoes adaptation processes in the conditions of a foreign cultural environment. Nevertheless, the traditional nature of martial arts forces those engaged in them to look for symbolism in traditional forms.

One of the properties of martial arts in the vast expanses of Eurasia is the desire to complicate the symbolic space of the hall in order to approach the ideal. This aspiration is a movement that begins in the obligatory (used by all) symbolism on the wall, and ends with materials and color. The disclosure of this movement from simple to complex is a methodology that shows the symbolic series of dojos.

If in culture the tradition has only a chronological depth, then in relation to martial arts, the tradition acquires geographical coordinates: eastern means traditional.

Accordingly, specialized sports halls where martial arts are practiced, on the territory of modern Eurasia, see the symbolic ideal of the device of this hall in Japanese samples (as they understand them), if we are talking about martial arts of Japanese origin.

The article relates to the social anthropology of sports and is based on field observations of the authors, as well as on the analysis of network, film and literary sources.
